Diana Steele, BSc, RD, discusses getting kids to eat healthy foods.

What is Local Nutritionist

Whether you want to lose weight, better understand the glycemic index, manage a disease such as osteoporosis or improve depression symptoms, a local nutritionist can be an asset to your healthcare team. A local nutritionist is a health provider who has taken additional training and education in nutritional science. There is a definitive connection between your physical and mental health, so a local nutritionist can help you understand how your diet affects your overall well-being. If you have a mental health condition, your local nutritionist can help you understand more about how your diet can help. They may work with your local family physician to help you manage your health and nutrition plan.

Most people can consume probiotics without experiencing any adverse effects. However, in some cases, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions, there have been reports of infections caused by certain strains of probiotics. These infections are extremely rare and usually affect individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplantation. Therefore, it is important for individuals with compromised immune function to consult with their healthcare provider before taking probiotic supplements.

Regarding the health benefits of probiotics, the evidence is still limited and sometimes conflicting. While some studies suggest that certain strains of probiotics can be beneficial for specific conditions, such as certain types of diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, or preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea, the overall evidence is not yet conclusive. The effectiveness of probiotics may vary depending on the specific strain, dosage, and the individual's unique circumstances.

It's worth noting that the field of probiotic research is still evolving, and ongoing studies aim to better understand the potential benefits and mechanisms of action of different strains of probiotics. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, more research is needed to establish the specific health benefits and optimal usage of probiotics for various conditions.

In summary, probiotics are generally considered safe to consume, but there can be rare instances of bacteria-host interactions and potential side effects, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems. While probiotics have been marketed for various health benefits, the overall evidence supporting these claims is limited, and further research is needed to determine their efficacy for specific conditions. It is always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement or making significant changes to your diet.
